Richard Swadden (Retired)* founded Swadden & Company in 1988 and is the firm’s managing partner. Rick graduated from the UBC Law School in the top ten of his class in 1973 and articled at what is now McCarthy Tétrault. He was called to the bar of British Columbia in 1974. Rick was then awarded a Commonwealth Scholarship, tenable at the London School of Economics, where he attended in 1974 and 1975, receiving a Master’s degree in law in November, 1975.
During his over 40 years of practice in Vancouver, Rick has had extensive experience in a number of practice areas. These include insurance litigation, corporate and commercial litigation, estate litigation, wills and estate planning, probate and estate administration, incorporations, corporate law, corporate reorganizations, and real estate transactions. Rick has a long-standing interest in law firm economics, management, and technology.
Rick’s current main practice focus is the defence of personal injury claims on behalf of ICBC. Rick has acted for ICBC since 1976. He has appeared before all levels of court in British Columbia and has defended cases involving catastrophic injuries, brain injuries, orthopaedic injuries, chronic pain, and psychological injuries. He has conducted a number of jury trials with excellent results.
Rick lives with his wife in Vancouver. Rick is a lifelong sailor and has sailed into almost every bay and cove in the Salish Sea as well as many in the Caribbean and Aegean Seas. In recent years he has travelled extensively. Rick particularly enjoys a good game of bridge accompanied by a good bottle of Bordeaux wine.
